Everything written in Mr Proctor's message would be entirely valid and salient were it not for the fact that it was totally untrue. I live on Elmwood rd and during the day it is impossible to find parking, during the night time there are plenty of spaces. I have just walked my dog down the road and there are probably twenty or so spaces on the rd, at around 7pm there were none. Where have the cars gone? Mr Proctor suggests that the problem comes from residents having too many cars, is he then suggesting that at night time we take the cars to another area, because that is the only explanation for the lack of cars at night. Or could it be that the commuters who park on this rd invariably don't get back to their cars before 7pm after work? If they work in the city and finish at around 6pm they will not get back here before then and probably after. Try looking at around 9pm and then please explain to me the lack of cars if all these arguments are correct. If you ask all of the residents of Elmwood rd when the problem occurs you will find that it is actually during the daytime. I am all for a fair discussion, but when a group of individuals start changing the facts to support their own argument it becomes a bit pointless. Perhaps you could ask my wife who has to come back to the house with two children under two in the car and a boot load of shopping when the problem occurs? I can tell you it is never in the late evening and rarely at weekends, whereas during the day it is impossible. In fact I regularly walk to where the car has been parked during the day, because there were no spaces, later in the evening when I walk the dog and bring it back to park near the house to make it easier for her the next day. I genuinely do this two or three times a week. I actually think that the 'no' camp make some very valid points in certain areas, but please let's stick to the actual facts and not make up playschool statistics to back up our arguments. I actually have a statistic for you. Twice since Christmas I have actually been asked on two separate occasions by motorists whether it is okay to park on the street for long periods of time. When I asked why I was told, 'because we're going to the airport and we need somewhere to park for the week', when i politely said, 'you can park anywhere here, but I doubt the residents will find it particularly helpful' they drove off luckily. To say nothing of the black cabs left here or the cars of workers who are then picked up in vans and driven to work. As I have said, I am keen on a measured argument, but take offence when people start jumping on a bandwagon that is supported by weak and quite frankly, untrue, comments. If it is not a problem during the day then there will be no objections for a trial CPZ just on our road then. If each house has this mystical plethora of cars I keep hearing about, then the road will still be packed with cars? If, as I suspect, it will actually be half empty, as it is whilst I write this message by the way, then we will be proved right. Also, given all the observations of plenty of spaces during the daytime, no one will be affected by any overspill from the CPZ just on Elmwood Road so why the objections? Let's stick to the facts and actually get the main objections right please. |
