If anyone is interested, my comment on "mob rule" was in the context of the powerfully put arguments that the majority view should always prevail regardless of the harm done to a significant minority. As I have said on this forum before - a mature democracy is not one in which the views of the majority always wins out at the expense of others. If this is not immediately obvious to most readers of this thread .... I apologise. If I persuaded anyone not to vote for me that is obviously a matter for personal regret. I obviously believe that the principle that I was elected as a representative (of all the residents of Riverside) and not a mandated delegate is an important one. Paradoxically, it was I who as the previous Chair of the Area Planning Committee insisted on public consultation meetings and that the second stage consultation should encompass all previously consulted households and not just those in the proposed zones. Neither of these is standard practice for CPZ consultations but demonstrate quite clearly my commitment to making local democracy as transparent as possible. I am happy to stand on my record of service. Details of my work rate and expenses are a matter of public record. It would be wonderful if more members of the public actually attended as observers the many coucil meetings at which I and my colleagues try hard to represent the best interests of our constituents. I believe that last night's meeting was successful and highlighted a number of questions that need to be answered before the CPZ proposal comes to the Area Planning Committee - I hope in April. |
