Michael, for now we have no statistics on this but we do have observation which at least gives us a clue what is happening. Although, it can be assumed that the restrictions will have increased traffic on Chiswick Lane and CHR this has not yet led to a noticeable increase in congestion. However, as traffic flow on Rivercourt Road remains high, we are probably going to see a prolonged adjustment in which the number of people using it are whittled down after they receive a fine. You might want to quibble with the figures I produced showing congestion had increased on CHR over the last five years but you can only do so on the basis of how much rather than denying the reality of increased delays. That the junction is no safer would be obvious to anyone actually using it. Even if the way is clear for a vehicle turning in from King Street, the danger has increased as a vehicle decelerating when emerging from Rivercourt will cause less injury than one accelerating when turning in. This has been demonstrated by the level of serious injury to cyclists experienced at the Weltje junction compared to the Rivercourt one. What appears to have happened here is that the configuration of the latter has been changed to resemble the more dangerous one of the former. |
