| I don't think you can rely on established relationships from existing signalised junctions to project forward likely collisions at Chiswick Lane and Dukes Avenue. They are only partially signalised because a significant proportion of cyclists ignore the signals so, to that degree you would expect collision statistics to mirror unsignalised junctions. You presumably cycle through these junctions as often or more often than I do but I would estimate that around 20% of cyclists disregard the signals at Chiswick Lane and 30% at Dukes Avenue. The phases are very long so you can understand why they do so but they would be safer staying in the general traffic lanes. Another point that needs to be considered is that traffic along Weltje Road is probably well below historic levels at the moment because of the closure of Hammersmith Bridge. If and when that reopens there will be a significant increase in the number of vehicles using this route and they will need to cross the cycleway in Chiswick at some point. I'm not sure directing them to cross at points were signal observance is not as high as it should be will achieve the desired outcome of fewer cyclist collisions. |
