| Francis, you are now hypothesising outcomes that we know will not happen. Firstly there are currently much fewer collision injuries at signalled junctions on the High Road than at Weltje and Rivercourt despite their carrying much more traffic. Secondly, there are currently many more pupils crossing King St every day without incident than would have to cross the road to get on a coach. In fact removing access to the A4 will mean less traffic on King St passing the school, further reducing the risk to pedestrians. Thirdly, the collision risk at unsignalled side road junctions is proportional to the number of vehicles and any mitigating factors. If the traffic is high, none of the treatments that we know reduce risk will prevent an excess risk at such junctions. Hence we already know that stopping through traffic on these streets will lower the overall number of collision injuries as it will mean more traffic on signalled junctions which we know to be considerably safer, despite all the observations you might make. It will also reduce the risk of collision injury to both car occupants in the A4 and pedestrians on King St. Your view that this would lead to “zero benefit in safety terms at least” simply ignores what we already know about where injury collisions have occurred. |
