| How nice to see a grown up discussion of these issues with nearly everyone acknowledging the complexity of the problems being presented. It seems pretty clear that the H&F section of the cycleway was implemented with undue haste. I've seen this attributed to Andrew Gilligan demanding work be started almost immediately if funding was to be given but, whatever the cause, the deficiencies of the scheme need to be dealt with. This seems to be part of a broader problem in which funding from central government is given on a unpredictable basis making it difficult for local authorities to form overall strategies and biasing them towards large scale 'big win' schemes. This has had the dangerous effect of TfL being totally committed to projects no matter what their actual impact. It is impossible these days to rely on figures they supply as they have clearly been drawn up by press people rather than traffic engineers. What clearly needs to be done now is patch up the problems at the junctions along King Street to reduce the number of serious injuries. This should be done urgently. Then, rather than embarking on yet more radical change with no real understanding of the likely impact, such as the closure of Weltje and Rivercourt Roads, an independent traffic consultant such as Steer should be called in to analyse both the historic impact of the Safer Cycle Pathway and look at the benefit and costs of any future proposed mitigation. |
