| Peter, we tried your idea for 60 years. It hasn't worked. Other places that have tried the other method of protected space for cycling have done really rather well. Here is one recent example where politicians had the courage to push through the inevitable resistance and predictions of the death of the city. Cycling reached the target of 35% of modal share of trips by 2030 in just the first two years of the scheme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEOA_Tcq2XA Politicians who do this will be rewarded for it. Interestingly the Conservative Council of Canterbury is replicating the Ghent circulation plan and it is being bitterly opposed by the Labour opposition which is saying exactly the same things, using the same hysterical words as our local Conservatives and the cagers on this forum. |
