| John, I agree that Gordon Brown received impressive support from Labour MP's. However it is well known that many Labour MP's are less than enthusiastic in their support for Mr Brown- especially Labour MP's in marginal seats in England. It is also known that heavy pressure was brought to bear on Labour MP's not to nominate John O'Donnell or Michael Meacher who wanted to run for the leadership but were prevented from doing so by the Labour Party's rules. That is of course quite deplorable. There should have been an election and Labour Party members should have been given a choice - ideally between Gordon Brown (Yesterday's Man) and Young Milliband. Unlike Mr Brown, John Major was elected Leader of the Conservative Party after a closely contested election involving two very credible alternative candidates- Douglas Hurd and Michael Heseltine. In that way John Major secured his mandate to lead the Conservative Party and in due course he secured his mandate as Prime Minister by winning a General Election. It remaims to be seen whether Gordon Brown will go for an early General Election to secure his own mandate or if he will rely on Tony Blair's mandate for as long as possible. The election of Harriet Harman as Deputy Leader came as something of a surprise. She was certainly a more credible candidate than most of the others on offer although of course her deficiencies are well known. |
