| Your comments about the Tories' "reign" suggests you are too young to remember the "Winter of Discontent" of 1978/9 and just how much of a shambles the Tories inherited. Blair & Brown were fortunate to inherit a reformed and sound economy and it is to their credit that they haven't managed to mess it up too much. Glad you think education is in great shape - perhaps you were a winner in the postcode lottery. The NHS seems to manage to limp onwards without much obvious gain from the zillions thrown at it, and has its good points and its bad, just as it always did. However, the domestic legacy of the Blair-Brown years will be the damage they have done to the country's constitution and the failure to reverse the public's low opinion of politicians - whether it be by producing dodgy dossiers as an excuse to go to war or by permitting expense claims that are clearly unjustifiable (no prizes for guessing the identity of the local beneficiary of the latter). |
