| "...it is well documented that quite a few of the deaths have been due to inadequate equipment, equipment shortages and ammunition shortages. For that the British Government has to be held responsible." There was the case of the soldier killed by friendly fire in Iraq because of a shortage of body armour. Are there any other well documented instances of equipment shortages being directly responsible for deaths? The whole Iraq invasion was built on a number of false assumptions, including that a relatively small number of troops would be sufficient to provide security for a transition to democracy there. For producing that overarching shortage the primary responsibility lies with Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. Blair's failure was in committing British troops to this ill-conceived project. It should be remembered, though, that Rumsfeld bluntly said he didn't need a UK contribution - he already had more than enough troops to do the job! I think the neocons would have brought Iraq to its current state irrespective of any UK government. |
