| Phillip, The Foreign Secretary, Lord Carrington, resigned and the Defense Secretary, Sir John Nott, offered to resign because they or their departments gave the wrong advice to Mrs Thatcher. They did the honourable thing and took political responsibility for the poor advice given by their departments. I met Sir John Nott socially shortly afterwards at a wedding in Cornwall and his admiration for Mrs Thatcher was unreserved. The Argentinian military junta invaded the Falklands in order to gain popularity at home and because the British Foreign Office had given them the impression that the Falklands did not matter to Britain. Mrs Thatcher thought differently as did Britain as a whole, and the rest is history. |
