It was not only poor intelligence but it was dreadfully poor and fabricated intelligence which was then deliberately misrepresented and distorted for political purposes.

The proof us simple- no Weapons of Mass Destruction have been found in Iraq.

This is well understood and accepted by senior members of the defence and intelligence communities such as a senior former Ministry of Defense civil servant I had lunch with on Wednesday.

The governments were not fooled. The governments were the ones doing the fooling in order to convince their populations, parliaments, media and service personnel of the need for war.
