| Of course Mrs Thatcher had ultimate responsibility for winning the Falklands War. General Galtieri and the Argentine junta had ultimate responsiblity for starting it. By winning the war, Britian not only freed the Falklands but it also freed Argentina from military dictatorship and strengthened the cause of democracy and freedom not only in South America but worldwide. In particular it gave the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China, Cuba and other dicatatorships notice that Britain, in alliance with the USA and others, but alone if necessary, was prepared to fight to defend its interests. It was good to see Tony Blair take Margaret Thatcher's arm at the recent 25th Anniversary Commemoration. That was probably the most useful thing he has done in recent years. The response of the veterans on that occasion showed that, despite her advanced years, Britain and the World remembers Margaret Thatcher as a person who only fought when this country's vital interests were at stake- and that when Britain fought, it won. So unlike the present misgovernment. |
