| David, There is one point I would challenge in your responses (the majority of which I concur with) and that is your inference in your response of 21/05/07 (18.00) that a "lot of conservatives" were against the war. The facts are that on March 18th 2003 when the parliamentary amendment saying "the case for war against Iraq has not yet been established" was voted on, the Blair government would have been defeated if it had not been for the support from Tory votes (140 for and only 16 against). This compared with 139 Labour votes against which is the largest rebellion in a governing party since the Liberals split over Home Rule in 1886 - one suspects an entry in the record books that will not feature in Blair's or Brown's memoirs! |
