| “The bogus claims of Weapons of Weapons of Mass Destruction were essentially formulated by Blair and those in his immediate circle such as Alastair Campbell in order to convince Labour and indeed Tory MP's that the War was necessary. I greatly regret that some many otherwise intelligent MP's swallowed those lies.” - This I think alludes to one of the most shameful yet overlooked aspects of the Blair era - the subordination of civil servants to party functionaries. In the run up to the Iraq invasion, we had Alistair Campbell chairing meetings of the Joint Intelligence Committee on September 5th and 9th. These meetings were the genesis of the dossier claiming Saddam had WMDs ready at 45 minutes notice, his regime’s military progress in the face of sanctions and the claim Iraq could produce a nuclear weapon with a couple of years. I’ll repeat that for you – Alistair Campbell chaired the two Joint Intelligence Committee meetings that precipitated the 'dodgy dossier' outlining the most fatuous government claims in the approach to the Iraq invasion. Furthermore, John Williams (a former colleague of Campbell at The Mirror newspaper) wrote the first draft of this. It was the claims in this dossier and the manner in which they were produced that seemingly so troubled Dr David Kelly. |
