| Like him or loathe him Gordon Brown received the support of more Labour MP's than the last PM to come on the scene without a General Election, John Major, received from Tory MP's at the time. Indeed, I believe the number of MP's who nominated Brown under the Labour Party procedure exceed the sum total of the Parliamentary opposition. This meant he was elected unopposed. Uncomfortable for some but factually accurate. More interesting is the method of voting that produced his deputy. How about the alternative vote method for Parliamentary elections? That way, there is no need to vote for a party you abhor in order to get rid of another. |
