| Having done a little googling, I found it strangely difficult to get recent figures on the National Debt. -------- www.dmo.gov.uk/reportView.aspxrptCode=D4A&rptName=20886580&reportpage=CRND/national_debt The CRND (Commissioners for the Reduction of the National Debt) give figures from 1855 - 2002 but are silent thereafter. 1996 stood at £390.6 billion 1997 stood at £419.5 billion 2002 stood at £434.5 billion ---------- www.dmo.gov.uk/reportView.aspx?rptCode=D4A&rptName=20886580&reportpage=CRND/national_debt Here we are given a figure for the end of 2003 in the region of £437 billion. ---------------- www.ostrichfs.co.uk/IVA-News/National-debt-tops.html The ONS released figures today which show that UK national debt has breached the £500 billion level for the first time ever. Despite the highest ever level of total tax revenues, at the end of 2006, government net debt stood at £504.1bn, up from £467bn at the end of 2005. --------------- This gives, conservatively, increased borrowing of roughly £100,000,000,000 between New Labour coming to power in 1997 and the end of 2005. ---------- The Daily Mail has this to say (pinch of salt please): www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=418774&in_page_id=1770 Gordon Brown has been accused of covering up the true scale of Britain's national debt which research claims is three times higher than the Government admits. A new study claims that public debt is a massive£1.3 trillion, equivalent to £53,000 for every household in the UK. -------------- And the bit of research I most enjoyed was trying to find out how many noughts in a billion. We seem to have 9, the Americans have 12. |
