| Gordon Brown was crowned the Leader of the Labour Party yesterday in Manchester without an election of any sort.He will therefore become Prime Minister on Wednesday without an election of any sort. Nobody in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland has ever voted for Gordon Brown to be Leader of the Labour Party or Prime Minister. In fact the only people who have voted for him are the people in his Kikcaldy constituency in Scotland who voted for him to become their MP. The Labour Party likes to conside itself to be a democratic party. If it is so democratic, why then did it not have a leadership election or at least ballot all its members as to who should be its Leader ? Mr Brown will now wield vast power without having been elected. Gordon Brown and other Scottish MP's and ministers will be able to decide matters regarding the health service, education, transport, planning and the environment in England, Wales and Northern Ireland even though he and they are not answerable to the electorates of England, Wales or Northern Ireland. In contrast however, Gordon Brown and other Scottish MP's and ministers are not able to decide matters regarding the health service, education, transport, planning and the environment in Scotland because in Scotland such matters are the responsibility of the Scottish Executive and Parliament. What a farce ! What right therefore has the British Government to say that it is fighting and asking British troops to die in order to establish democracy in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq ? |
