| “I think you will find that there are many well documented cases of inadequate equipment, equipment shortages and ammunition shortages as being responsible to the deaths of British service personnel both in Afghanistan and Iraq… There is the well documented cases of the use of unarmoured or lightly armoured Land Rovers being used by British forces because nothing more suitable was provided. Many British tropps have died or been wounded because of this.” - Such as the deaths of over 20 British soldiers such as Pte Phillip Hewett, 2nd Lt Richard Shearer and Pte Leon Spicer in inadequate ‘Snatch’ Land Rovers. Such as the death of Cpl Darren Bonner last week in Afghanistan, killed by a mine in a Viking APC with inadequate mine protection. Such as the death of Sgt Steve Roberts in Iraq after having to hand back his body armour. Such as soldiers in Afghanistan being deployed in unarmoured ‘WMIK’ Land Rovers. Such as the scrapping of 500 Saxon armoured personnel carriers (with a replacement over 40 years old), the Panther Command Liaison Vehicle, our bomb disposal teams’ ‘Tellar’ vehicle being only fitted with ‘a level of riot protection’ rather than real armour, etc, etc. |
