| Steve Taylor pointed out... " One of the three Chiswick anti car fanatics has confirmed that the tree was killed so to make way for a temporary cycle lane and so that he could burn it in his wood burning stove!" I think you'll find he was being "ironical"; but obviously so. The point being that once its been established that someone makes "ironical" remarks, then it's possible for them to backtrack on statements made in the past which may subsequently appear questionable or quite simply wrong, with the retort "You didn't really think I was being serious did you ?" This has distinct advantages over other methods of evasion. Such as suddenly lapsing into incoherence, pressing medical problems (requiring a good memory and medical knowledge to succeed), supposedly emigrating and posting under a new name. etc etc michael adams ... |
