| Sadiq Khan along with all London politicians are faced with a near impossible task. Attempting to reconcile London's Transport needs with public concern about pollution. The tubes are packed to capacity, the roads are packed to capacity (admittedly CS9 doesn't help) but in the absence of massive Central Govt investment in public transport, or road pricing based on both need and ability to pay, what else can they do ? Discourage motoring as much as possible, and encourage people to cycle instead. However while politically expedient, this is totally unrealistic. It simply isn't going to happen. Both because people simply can't be forced to ride bicycles, more especially in winter or in the rain; while nationally it would lose votes hand over fist. However locally, spurred on by London's particular predicament, its been seized on by a group of cycling "visionaries" who have mesmerised local politicians with their dream of a sustainable future. "Their hour is come". At least until the next election or some tragic accident; which their opponents will doubtless quickly seize on. The degree of naivety being shown is quite astonishing; while arguments don't really come into it at all. You'd probably get more sense arguing with a speak your weight machine. michael adams |
