| Ed Saper explains quote: " You even appeared to disagree that we need lights for bikes because only truly stupid people would do that - or maybe you were agreeing, you seem confused:" "on all moving vehicles, from trains to bicycles people have always seen the need for lights after dark. Except for the *truly stupid*." end quote: Confused ? How exactly? You didn't take my advice did you ? And show it to somebody else before posting. As to *stupid* cyclists I suggest you out the check the career of W.O."Bill" Hamilton one of the most gifted evolutionary biologists of the last century. It was his work that Dawkins popularised in the "Selfish Gene", Hamilton was equally famous around Oxford for careering around on his bicyle at full speed, had numerous accidents, and went through a car windscreen at one point. This was put down to eccentricity on his part although I doubt whether any of the drivers of the cars saw it in quite that way. However it was only subsequently when he refused to adopt a cycling helmet that some of his colleagues deemed him *foolish* anyway. When in fact the opposite was the case. The very fact that he'd survived so many accidents indicated that helmets weren't quite as indispensible as was claimed. He eventually died of a disease caught on a field trip. As to seat belts its been suggested that as a result of *risk compensation* drivers wearing seat belts drive faster and take greater risks - at the expense of cyclists and other road users. You can look that one up as well. So that's your homework for tonight settled. michael adams |
