| But they were actually bred to be murdered. I think the seasonal amputation of holly might be more cruel. As for deaths to humans, who maybe deserve a mention, there were 300 fewer fatalities on our roads last year simply as there were fewer motor vehicles that cause nearly all the deaths in the first place. However, there was an increase in cyclist fatalities down in part to the dramatic increase in cycling. Around 100 cyclists a year had been dying on our roads over the recent years, but last year it spiked up to 141. It turns out that while there was a large increase in fatality rates on our mostly unprotected rural A roads, the protection that was rapidly deployed in our cities meant the fatality rate per mile there actually fell. We could rip all that protection out, and maybe save a few trees which would help assuage our guilt for our annual Christmas-tree genocide, but last year's fatalities indicates it would come at the cost of scores of cyclists lives. Even worse, if that just pushed people back into cars, we would see hundreds more lives lost on our roads. |
