| Ed Saper accused me thus (added exclamation marks) "You missed the point [!!!}" Au contraire ! The point is that in order to make *stupid* cyclists do a *sensible thing*, which any sensible person would do anyway, it's necessary to pass a law. But in order to stop *stupid* cyclists doing the countless other *stupid* things they all do, endangering both their own lives and that of others it would be necessary to pass literally *hundreds* of laws; none of which it it would be possible to enforce in the first place. Only yesterday when on foot I saw a *stupid* cyclist on a side road approach a tee juction with another side road at speed. Intending to turn left he moved to the right so as to take the corner at speed. I happened to know that despite appearances to the contrary, the road he rode into is relatively busy with cars. Say with one every 30 seconds doing 20mph and more. Had there been a car coming in either direction he would have been toast. He looked old enough to have a wife and children and was probably just "popping out " to the shops round the corner for Sunday morning stuff. As a result of his selfish stupidity, not only potentially would he have left a widow and children, he would have provided the driver of that car with the traumatic experience of killing someone, something for which he was in no way responsible. While being a witness I would have felt it my duty to hang around for half an hour with some bloke spread all over the road. Trying very hard not to look, and leave me with an image I would never forget. But no law was broken there Ed. There are sill 422km of "unsafe" roads in the LBH of Hounslow alone, where such things could happen any day of the week. And this is what happens when you encourage stupid* people to ride bicycles. And please don't give me the training stuff with the links. Cycling training is regarded as such a priority in the UK that it's left in the hands of charities to operate in co-operation with local councils. And people like matey above wouldn't attend unless forced in any case. Their stupidity will only become apparent when they end up in hospital or on a slab. Another supposed "victim" to feature in somebody's statistics. michael adams * Stupidity which, as explained previously, is not limited to any specific socio-economic group. ... |
