| It’s good to hear your voice supporting the reallocation of parking space to usage that better supports local retail. After all, it was the removal of roadway outside your premises many decades ago that allowed you to spread out across the pavement. But you’re mistaken to say I haven’t mentioned this before. I wrote over a year ago when Devonshire Road first restricted motor vehicles: “there's already a couple of new tables outside Vinoteca, but the idea is make the vacated parking spaces more suitable for outside dining by putting in "parklets" or decking. It is very common on the continent. The same can be done on TGT. In both cases it's reallocating space from vehicles to pedestrians.” While Devonshire Road has moved in the right direction, it’s still not fully realised it’s potential, but it looks like there’s a growing consensus on the direction of travel: “The BCA consultation showed that 69% of residents support the removal of parking in the High Street to bring wider benefits. 61% of the 364 residents and businesses who responded to the Council’s consultation supported the proposals. Only 27% indicated that they drive to the High Street. The remaining 73% wanted improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.” |
