| Completing a survey is not vocally supporting car restrictions and that is what was a required as a counterpoint to the loud and persistent voices of the dry cleaner, pet shop, chiropractor, rug guy and interiors shop owner with Councillor Biddolph. The reason they won a resounding victory for the car over people is because nobody was prepared to stand up and argue passionately for a better vision for the street. Change doesn’t happen when people are not prepared to stand up and be counted to lead it. Why do traders think they should be beyond reproach from customers who are dissatisfied with the role they played in making the street far less pleasant to visit and shop in than it used to be? I know a lot of people who think the same, who really enjoyed the street when cars were restricted and who don’t go there any more. Should there be no consequences for businesses making short-sighted decisions that worsen the environment for all of us? |
