| People are willing to confidently state that parking is essential to retail on the basis of no figures whatsoever! In fact the figures from the two traders were remarkably consistent. The fact that there was not a discernible change in turnover from the withdrawal of parking is down to some combination of the relatively small contribution of customers who are reliant on car access, and excess parking capacity nearby and a willingness to walk such that there is no specific retail benefit in having parking right outside the premises. Of course proprietors parking in those spots confirms they don’t see such customer parking as critical either. Either case undermines the argument that parking, as opposed to loading, in front to a shop makes any significant difference to turnover. |
