| Penny, the self-appointed champion of the traders on Devonshire Road is busy tweeting almost every day that Chiswick is inaccessible and that local residents have to leave Chiswick to shop and eat out. The Glebe estate residents gleefully share on their WhatsApp group and anti-cycling Facebook groups that the evening restrictions are not enforced so it is safe to break the law in their cars (in between whining about cyclists riding the wrong way down a one way street). The traders at the High Road end of the street are dumping their cars all day in Disabled and Loading bays and on double yellow lines. And while people are killing eight year old girls in their school with their Defenders and maiming 16 year olds girls and a man walking on a pavement with their BMWs many families like mine are not going to sit inches away from speeding phone drivers for an ice cream. The street is a confused mess but I am not in the least surprised that the traders are satisfied with that. They have only themselves to ask if their businesses might have been more successful if they had fought against the small group of reactionaries to keep the street full of people instead of cars. |
