| It's worth adding that traffic across Chiswick Bridge actually fell by 3% between 2020 and 2021 while it rose by 11% in London and 13% in both Hounslow and Richmond boroughs. Rather than increase traffic on the boundary road, the Hartington restrictions coincided with reduced traffic crossing the Thames into Chiswick. That should not be surprising as the removal of the ratrunning route across Grove Park would have discouraged traffic from crossing Chiswick Bridge in the first place. It's just the same effect that led to the fall in traffic on South Parade after Fishers Lane was closed. Similar considerations would explain the fall in traffic on boundary roads seen for the LTNs in Islington and Camden. It's also consistent with the simple fluid-flow model of traffic: placing a boulder in a stream not only directly prevents flow through its volume, it significantly slows flow around it and overall leads to a reduced flow rate for the stream. |
