| So Tom we can all agree its a problem and that we need less traffic. But as many posters will tell you we are seeing traffic diverted by CS9 and LTNs onto already busy roads. Michael seems to think as traffic 'should' be there it doesnt matter. But given as you state we know the harm that traffic and congestion does in terms of pollution seems astonishingly uncaring to ignore the impact of this. More pollution monitors in W4 were promised but have they ever arrived? We dont know what the problem is unless we measure it. So we need to look at solutions that reduce overall traffic volumes, not least the stream of commuter traffic into London every day. With Crossrail open this is the perfect time for an enlarged congestion charge. We also need to look at measures then to encourage these commuters to use public transport, taxes on office parking spaces a good start but also better transport to and parking at commuter stations. We cant just move traffic around and pretend its all OK. Cycling may make a contribution but more accessible and affordable transport as well as more of a stick to dissuade commuters is the only solution that will work. |
