Traffic on the A4 in Chiswick was down 25% in 2021 compared to prepandemic levels and the High Road saw an even larger comparative reduction. I'm certainly not ignoring the impact of the traffic measures. Pollution levels on the High Road have been measurably lower compared to the three years before the pandemic. Pollution across the five species monitored averaged 71% of prepandemic levels in 2022, compared to 65% in 2021 and 69% in 2020 - it looks like we have locked in the improvement seen on the High Road during the pandemic. Of course it would be good to have more pollution monitors, but pollution levels are mainly dependent on traffic volumes and those volumes are down overall in Chiswick. So while I agree moving traffic around doesn't achieve very much, that's not what's been mainly happening. There's little evidence to claim that C9 and the LTNs have led to increased pollution, either based directly on pollution measurements or indirectly on traffic volumes. |
