| Mark, it’s most certainly not a mathematical impossibility as the Steer review reports precisely that outcome! Drivers were choosing Fishers Lane as their route because it was quicker rather than more direct: close it and trips became shorter in distance, even it they took longer. It was mathematically implausible that closing Fishers Lane would increase traffic in South Parade. After all, traffic choosing Fishers Lane necessarily had to access it via South Parade. It turns out that on average taking a route via Fishers Lane was longer than heading down either Turnham Green Terrace or Acton Lane. Hence closing Fishers Lane caused traffic on South Parade to drop overall and trips on average to become more direct, although also to take slightly longer. |
