| Richard, we should be grateful to Simon for demonstrating so effectively why we need such measures to reduce our driving in the first place. His argument that anything we might do in Chiswick will have a negligible effect on worldwide emissions could just as well be applied to the taxes he pays to support the NHS - they’ll hardly help put much a dent in their backlog either. In both cases, whether it be personally contributing to our emissions reductions commitments or our health service, if everyone adopted Simon’s attitude we are left with no action on climate change and no funding for the NHS. It is precisely because of people like Simon that we can’t rely on an NHS funded by donations or a policy on reducing emissions, or pollution or road-injuries, based on voluntary reductions in driving. The question now is what measures are most effective in reducing the amount we drive, not whether those volumes need to be reduced, and on that score the evidence from LTNs is strengthening. |
