| Domestic transport emitted 99 million tonnes of CO2 in 2020 compared to 118 million tonnes in 2019 and is the largest emitting sector of the economy. More than half of domestic transport emissions are from cars. Aviation emitted 15 million tonnes of CO2 in 2020 compared to 24 million tonnes in 2019. Cars alone now emit more than three times the CO2 of aviation. Both emissions obviously count so the third runway should be officially cancelled (is there any real prospect now?) and people should drive much less in terms of their personal transport. If the wealthiest third of Londoners drove the same amount as the less wealthy two thirds, we'd reach our emissions targets for London in 2030 with a reduction of 27% in car mileage. |
