In the last 10 years there have been 4 fatalities on the UK rail network (excluding suicides). 2 involving trackside workers, 1 at a level crossing, 1 with a passenger falling between train and platform, so none on trains themselves. Over the same period, there have been 18,000 fatalities on UK roads. The standard of safety on rail is far higher. The public tolerance of risk is danger is different as well. Risks that are accepted for driving would not be accepted on the rail network. Another point is the longevity of the signalling. It is likely to be in place for decades. Try finding a manufacturer of WiFi that will support their products for decades... |
