| In addition to what Michael said, by 7:30am the train frequency would be too high. The signalling blocks in the area are too long for trains to stop and start at TG unless the frequency is low. With trains slowing down in and out of the station, to clear the long signalling blocks at slow speeds would take too long, and you wouldn't be able to get the trains close enough together. They do want to leave some leeway in the timetable to recover from incidents. I'm not sure whether it was the Picadilly or another line, but I remember hearing that the service improved when they decreased the number of time tabled trains. They increased the timetable to 27 trains per hour, but the trains were basically nose to tail in terms of the signalling system, so even the most minor incident caused them to tail back. They went back to 24 trains per hour, and capacity actually increased. Modern signalling systems allow higher frequencies and increased capacity. |
