| So if the local 'block' is from Acton Town to Hammersmith doesn't that mean a train can't proceed eastbound at full speed until it has notification that the train ahead has left Hammersmith and can't move at all until it is made aware that the train ahead has arrived at Hammersmith. As this stretch of line is 4.6km, the longest bit without a stop by far on any section of the line this does mean a train might have to be held at quite a distance away from Hammersmith because there is nothing to indicate where the train ahead might be. That finally explains to me why so many trains seem to be held stationary between Acton Town and Turnham Green. Trains moving slowly through the station have presumably been signalled that the train ahead has arrived at Hammersmith but not left. Given the large distances involved wouldn't it have a minimal impact of the schedule if this overly long block was divided into two sections with Turnham Green in the middle. That would mean trains would get an earlier signal at Acton Town that they could proceed safely and not be regularly held miles away from where they need to be. The argument against a stop at Turnham Green based on the idea that the Piccadilly line needs to keep to a schedule seems to be undermined by the fact that the current configuration makes it impossible to keep to that schedule. |
