| I don’t know the details of what is actually installed at the moment but the principle of “fixed block” signalling is the track is divided into blocks and a train isn’t allowed to enter a block until the train ahead has left it. It could be a train is slowed down to continue through moving a block in anticipation of a train ahead leaving the next block rather than travelling faster, needing to stop, then starting again. Modern signalling systems use what is called “moving block” which is more flexible rather than being literally hard wired along the track and the trains themselves have faster acceleration and deceleration and all that means they can travel closer together to provide more trains per hour. |
