| You are probably correct in that Catholic schools receive funding from the state as to how much and whether it is the same funding that other state schools receive I do not know. I do believe however that when I was at school many years ago, certainly my parents were under the impression that Catholic schools were pretty much self sufficient in that as I said in my previous posting, they were largely staffed by members of their religious orders, i.e. nuns, priests, monks and possibly were not paid a salary. Also the schools were invariably built on church land. Parishioners and parents contributed financially towards the upkeep of those schools. I can remember whilst I was a child all the fund raising at Our Lady of Grace & St Edward's, the catholic church in Chiswick, for the funds to build a Catholic school in Chiswick, which I believe they achieved with St. Mary's. I can also remember Cat Stevens being responsible for the first Muslim school somewhere or the other in London (can't remember where). He donated the proceeds from his music I believe and funds were raised by the local Muslim community. I presume that school also receives some sort of state assistance but as I said before who but a Muslim wants to attend it? Whether you like it or not, most Catholic schools in this area were founded by and run by miscellaneous holy orders and they were therefore attended by people who believed in their teachings. If they have turned out to be better schools - what does that tell you? My two daughters attended Gumley House and my son Gunnersbury but they could just as easily have been denied places as the demand for places always exceeds the places available. As I said before I would not have been happy if they had not been accepted but someone of a different background and faith had been! That said, I believe that both Gumley and Gunnersbury do accept children that are not Catholics in any event but not I hope to the exclusion of Catholics. |
