| Richard, you seem to misunderstand the nature of the relationship between the state and the various Churches in education. Normally the Church provides the buildings and pays a percentage of maintenance in return for which they get state funding and control over admissions. If you told them that they couldn't control admissions any more they wouldn't play ball and the chances are they would opt out of the education system putting many of the buildings that they own onto the market. The cost to the state would run into tens of billions. The upheaval in the education system would be catastrophic. It may be that some schools in more prosperous areas like St. Mary's here in Chiswick would become fee-paying but schools like Gunnersbury would almost certainly close. In many inner city areas particularly in the north and the midlands faith schools provide the majority of places. These would almost certainly close. The loss of places in education would blight a generation of children. You may have a point if you were to say that if you were designing an education system from scratch this isn't the way you would do it but you are misguided if you think it is practical to change it in the way you suggest. |
