| Derek said :"As for the Oratory its admission policy is more scrutinised than any other in the country. I can't understand why it takes children from such a wide geographical area but there is little evidence that it discriminates on a socio-economic basis. On the usual measures i.e. free school meals, attainment on admission and English as a second language it doesn't appear to be managing its intake in this way." According to the Sutton Trust, 7.9% of Oratory kids are eligible for free school meals. (38% of kids in the borough are elgible for free school meals) At Gunnersbury, 22% are eligible for the free meals. How does one explain the disparity between the two schools? They recruit from similar areas (West London parishes). At the Catholic primary school close to the Oratory that I mentioned before, 26% of pupils get free meals- and the Oratory doesn't take them, but Gunnersbury does (and does well with them) Does interviewing change the social demographic of a school? I believe it must be. Catholicism can't be purely concentrated in the classes of people who don't get free meals (otherwise Gunnersbury would have fewer kids eligible) |
