| There are a couple of points which are always conveniently ignored by the anti-church schools lobby and they are: 1. Their ‘closed’ selection policy is only an issue if the school is a successful one. How many times would you hear the Oratory and Cardinal Vaughan being criticised, if they were schools at the lower end of the success ladder? Gunnersbury School never registered on their radar before it announced this change in its fortunes..and good luck to them! 2. Taking these two as examples; they weren’t highly successful schools which were then taken over by the catholic community, thus removing the non-catholic pupils! The hard work and commitment of the ‘school’, the community and the pupils first developed these two into successful places of learning, with future generations ensuring this standard is maintained. That said, I accept that this system stated in the last sentance isn’t exclusive to the catholic system. I fully support the need to interview the child and parent (s / carers) to ensure that the school and the family are fully informed of each other’s needs and expectations before a commitment is made. I’m very disappointed that this has been removed (apart from at the Oratory?), as I believe it to be the foundation of their success. |
