| "Northern Ireland style divisions to become a routine part of British society with the next few years." I think Chiswick has a bit to go before it reaches N Ireland style divisions although the pro and anti 4x4 lobbies come pretty close. There has been a small but rapidly growing move away from denominational schools in N Ireland driven mainly by parental pressure to have their kids educated in a non-sectarian/unsegregated schools. The situation is somewhat reversed in that the churches in N Ireland represent "the establishment" therefore have been fighting against government funding of non-denominational schools as they fear it will result in a reduction in their own funding, given finite education budgets. The denominational schools are probably also concerned upon the impact of N Ireland society of non-denominational schools because if kids don't have a religious-based education, they may then grow up to be delinquents, terrorists, bankrobbers... OK, maybe they had better not use that as a reason. |
