| Shaun, you seem to be under the illusion that just because you have no faith that you can't be a bigot. So much of what you have written is deliberately offensive. I'll ignore the bits in which you are expressing your prejudices and address the few times in which you put forward something that appears to be an argument. Firstly you say our education system shouldn't be diverse but that it should be uniform and that children should be taught a set of standardised values. Sounds great in principle but who decides what these values are. There is only a small subset of values that are truly universal beyond that there are a huge range of beliefs. I'm sure you imagine you or someone like you determining these values for our schools so you could suppress the nonsense that other people believe in. Luckily this wouldn't be acceptable in the 21st century. It was tried in Eastern Europe in the 20th century and failed miserably. It only takes a few moments into any debate into faith schools for someone to advance the killer fact that they must be bad because look at Northern Ireland. This is usually made by someone British who has never been there and would rule out the possibility that invasion and colonisation has anything to do with divisions in that society. Even when you point out that just 20 miles south of the border in the republic sizeable Protestant minorities co-exist in harmony despite an almost entirely faith based education system. |
