| "Your children aren't barred from Gunnersbury but as they or you don't share the ethos of the school it would be in nobody's interest to offer you a place most particularly your childrens." If the ethos of the school is to provide a good education and instil moral values based on the prevailing morality of the country - which has essentially developed from a western Christian viewpoint - then I may well share its ethos, and be happy for my child to go there to share in that ethos. That does not mean that I want to share in a particular religious sect. As a state-funded school it should be possible for pupils who share say 90% of the school's ethos to opt out of the sectarian religious aspects. Exclusion of non-Catholics removes that option. As I have previously mentioned, I went to a school with a primarily CofE ethos which was perfectly well able to cater for Catholics and Jews whose parents shared the bulk of the school's values, and allowed them to opt out of the religious services while participating fully in all other aspects of the school's life. Why should that be so difficult to accommodate at Gunnersbury ? And as I've also said earlier - when a participant in a debate resorts to insults it is a sign that they are losing the debate ! |
