Topic: Can we really cope for three years without Hammersmith Bridge?

According to the article on the front page Richmond Council have finally confirmed what has been rumoured for a while namely that the closure of Hammersmith Bridge is going to last for up to three years. 

Whilst appreciating that some areas have it worse than us is there any reason not to look forward  with anything but trepidation?

Bear in mind the following will be happening:

     
  • No Crossrail until the end of the closure period assuming it isn't postponed again
    •  
  • No Piccadilly line service upgrade and Turnham Green stop until afterwards
    •  
  • A 30% reduction in bus services along Chiswick High Road
    •  
  • CS9 construction work to take place starting this summer between Brentford and Hammersmith
    •  
  • Construction work already begun on cycle lane on A40 leading to increased journey times in the area
    •  
  • Construction work about to begin on Brentford Stadium development enabling project and a number of other significant schemes in the area which will lead to a substantial number of lorries travelling to the site.
    •  
  • Two very large projects seeking approval near Chiswick Roundabout — Hudson Square and Chiswick Curve which will start construction during this period if approved.
    •  
  • Over 2,000 new flats to be built in the Brentford area in this time.
    •  
  • CS9 opening will, according to TfL, increase journey times in the area
    •  
  • A new cycle lane through White City will, if approved, start construction within the next three years


What really concerns me is that nobody seems to be thinking strategically about this issues at the moment. Different parts of TfL seem more concerned to promote their particular project and there is no individual who is in a position to develop a strategy to ensure this part of the City does grind to a halt. The Mayor is ultimately responsible but if nobody at TfL is telling him that a crisis is looming he can't take all the blame for what happens.
