| As Paul said, just take a look at who is in the queue of cars along, say, Wellesley Rd or Sutton Court Rd, in the evening. Out of every 20, about 17-18 are single occupancy private cars. There are very few with PHV badges, so not many Ubers. They won’t be driving from central London because you don’t drive from central London and end up on Wellesley Rd or Sutton Court Rd. More likely these are commuters maybe working around Hammersmith, Kensington, White City. In the case of the drivers queuing westbound along Wellesley Rd in the evening, they must have used a different route in the morning because there is no eastbound access from the S Circular to Wellesley Rd. If someone lives in, say, Teddington and works in Hammersmith, it will take them about 50 minutes on public transport with one or two changes. Driving won’t be much slower even with the bridge closed to cars. And in their car they are in their “bubble”, they can play music loud, they can check up on social media on their phone when they are stationary or inching forward (yup, when you are cycling past the queue, just listen to the music blasting and look for how many drivers are using their phones...) The reality is that single occupancy private cars are the lowest priority when it comes to transport so don’t expect TfL to do very much for them. I agree with Paul that this is an opportunity to identify and block ratrunning along residential streets so at least they aren’t screwing these up. |
