| If there is parking available at their workplace, most would drive that journey as it's a lot cheaper. A single from Teddington to Richmond is £3.90, and another £2.40 from Richmond to Hammersmith. That's £6.30 one way. There will be discounts on season tickets etc but it's still going to be cheaper to use a car if you own one anyway. There is a good chance that it will be quicker by car most of the time as well. Most people aren't going to live/work right on top of the station at either end, so you probably need to allow 10 minutes or more for walking to/from the station at either end. You will normally wait a few minutes for District line trains. By the time you add that, then it's definitely going to be quicker by car on a good day. On a bad day with heavy traffic it might be different, but then you can get signal failures on trains as well. The best way for most people to commute from Teddington to Hammersmith would probably be by electric bike. The government could help by changing the rules on electric bikes to allow then to provide assistance up to 20mph rather than 15mph. It would then be much quicker and cheaper than car or rail. Canada and some US states already have standards that allow electric bikes to do 20mph. It would also remove the temptation to monkey with them and remove the speed governor - which happens quite a lot with the ones that are limited to 15mph. |
