| Spoke to someone who claimed to have the inside track at Hammersmith and Fulham Council at the weekend. She said that the initial proposal had been for the bridge to reopen with weight restrictions which would have required relatively minor repairs but TfL weren't interested because no buses would be allowed. The problem apparently is complicated by the bridges listed status. The technical challenge of replacing the corroded supports is not that great in itself but a specialist contractor needs to be found that can do so in a way that conserves the character of the bridge. It seems nobody properly qualified is free to do the work at the moment. The idea that because it is so old it can't be brought back into service appears to be a false one - there are apparently lots of examples of bridges far older which have been strengthen to accommodate modern buses and lorries. |
