If you lived in Teddington and worked in Hammersmith you wouldn't have used Hammersmith Bridge to get to work and probably would have just got the train to Richmond and then tube to Hammersmith to commute anyway. Just because someone is using a private car on a single occupancy basis doesn't mean their method of travel is easily substitutable. As Andrew says we have already seen a significant decrease in car use in London so it has to be concluded that those still driving are less likely to have a viable alternative. The biggest growth area for traffic is delivery vans and this isn't likely to slow over the next three years. Combine that with the extra construction and diverted traffic and you are going to see lots more blocked roads. Many of the cars you are seeing on Wellesley Road and Sutton Court Road have probably been diverted there by traffic apps. Regulation of these is the first thing to consider if we want to stop local residential streets becoming clogged. |
